Designed as guest houses on a large rural estate, the two barn-style residences reflect their rural setting through the use of rustic and recycled materials.
Crafted from recycled brick, the two barn-style residences feature burnished concrete floors, recycled ironbark timber trusses with distinctive metal plating, a stunning bluestone fireplace, vintage light fittings and hand-crafted copper pipe kitchen fixtures.
The guest quarters are unique in their minimalist approach and heavy reliance on recycled materials, which required meticulous preparation to ensure that each piece was crafted to suit the build, as well as the client’s vision.
Intended for use as a B&B concept, the properties were to be primarily maintenance-free and fully functional, allowing for guests to independently use the homes with minimal management. The guest builds were designed to link closely with the rural nature of the setting. The client’s wish for a minimalist approach to be offset by key features was at the heart of the design.
Externally the twin builds with the earthy tones of the red second-hand bricks provide a perfect link to the rural setting. The selection of the painted coloured bricks offers an exceptional contrast, as do the reversed bricks, contributing a clever nuance to the design. The high-pitched gable ends fitted to the 38-degree pitch of the roof, achieves the clients wish for an open atmosphere.
Large areas of double glazing within commercial frames complement the build. A round window set high in the gable end and Velux skylights are features in themselves, whilst providing additional light into the rooms.
Internally the space is accentuated by the soaring ceiling space, highlighted by the recycled ironbark timber trusses with distinctive metal plating. The burnished concrete floor, which is insulated to provide a thermal break, aesthetically links the interior to the earthy surrounds of the build.
The bluestone fireplace is the feature of the main space. The pitched blocks were selected purposely to anchor the build and draw attention to the tones and solid nature of the barn style. The inner walls are handmade red seconds and contrast beautifully with internal colour palette. These components are balanced by clever use of recycled materials for light fixtures, wall ornaments and decorative finishes.
The kitchen joinery package with Hacienda Black Printed Maxiply panelling and Caesarstone tops, blends beautifully with the walls and floor, whilst the copper pipe handles made especially for the joinery are an elegant touch. The brushed stainless kicker adds a definitive break to the cabinetry and the floor finish.
The red pine recycled doors add an excellent finish to the fit out and are complemented by careful selections of vintage door furniture. Whilst minimalist in material use, this combination brings a sensitive, comfortable, and period feel to the design.
