This Hedger Constructions custom home was designed as a weekend retreat in the bush, overlooking the Black Range State Forest, 100km northeast of Melbourne.

With the client brief being to create a relaxed and elegant weekend residence, simple geometric building forms frame the beauty of the undulating rural block with its mature eucalyptus and meandering water course. A palette of natural materials allows this home to exist harmoniously with its surrounds, providing a sense of tranquillity, calm and wellbeing.

The house is arranged on the sloping site as two joined rectangular boxes. Orientated to the north is the glass walled open plan living area with expansive views, and to the south is a more solid and enclosed area, slightly cut into the hillside, which contains the bedrooms and service areas. A single level home, the striking flat roof is reflective of mid-century design and the ethos of utilising clean lines with natural tones and materials to seamlessly integrate into the landscape.

With an understated elegance, the home features internal and external natural lime hard plaster walls to create a unique patina. Polished concrete floors made with locally sourced exposed aggregate river stones, flow through the property, creating a minimalist and low maintenance space.

Central to the delivery of this project was for it to utilise expert detailing that has been paired back to appear very simple. This is clearly apparent in the of the grid of discreetly joined laminated timber roof beams. This unique construction technique required meticulous precision from the Hedger Constructions team and has been executed to the highest standard of craftsmanship. The timber lined roof creates a warm golden hue throughout the home, and dramatically cantilevers beyond the rooms to define and protect the east and west facing outdoor areas.

Trackless solid timber sliding doors appear to invisibly float against the walls and are complemented by floor-to-ceiling glazing providing generous flow of natural light. Internally the home features a pallet of natural materials and neutral tones. A minimalist kitchen with custom made timber cabinetry runs the length of the dining space and is perfect for entertaining and casual meals.

From the thoughtful layout, through to the final touches, every detail contributes to this open and inviting home. The unique construction, materials and detailing give the project an uncomplicated feel, perfectly suited to its environment.
