Drawing directly from the rugged nature of the Cathedral Ranges, this residence is shaped by its landscape and the desire to create a home that feels deeply connected to its setting.
Rather than following a conventional single-volume arrangement, the house is divided into a series of distinct wings, allowing moments of privacy and retreat while still providing generous communal spaces for gathering and entertaining.
The architecture balances openness with enclosure, using the separation of spaces to create a gradual sequence between exposed living areas and more secluded private zones.
Large shared spaces form the social heart of the home, while individual wings provide a greater sense of intimacy and separation, challenging traditional ideas of how a family residence should be planned and experienced.
A restrained palette of grey tones establishes continuity throughout the interiors, allowing material texture and natural light to become the defining elements. Timber-lined walls extend across key spaces, visually merging walls and floors to create a seamless, enveloping interior language.
Externally, recycled timber introduces warmth and character while grounding the building within its natural surroundings and reinforcing the connection between architecture and landscape.
The material palette is deliberately quiet and tactile, with tonal finishes and natural textures creating a sense of calm and permanence.
Transitions between inside and out are softened through consistent material choices and carefully framed openings, allowing the boundaries of the home to feel less defined and the surrounding landscape to remain constantly present.
Through its unconventional planning, layered materiality and close relationship with the site, the project creates a home that feels both expansive and protected. It is designed to support slower living, meaningful connection and moments of retreat, while providing the scale and flexibility required for family life and entertaining.
