State Apprentice Award Winner for 2017

Hedger Constructions, Steven and Sharon Hedger along with painting supervisor Rodney Hedger, attended the Victory Room at Etihad Stadium Friday 12th May to share in the exciting announcement that apprentice painter Michael Miller had become the winner of the State Employer Nominated Apprentice Award for 2017.

In front of accompanying family and friends, Michael was selected from 21 other statewide regional winners. This is a well-deserved reward for Michael’s hard work and dedication over the past 4 years. Michael commenced with Hedger Constructions as a mature aged apprentice and completed his painting and decorating apprenticeship on May 1st this year. Completing his schooling modules off campus, Michael was supported by the Murray Mallee Training Company throughout his apprenticeship. Michael had to submit a portfolio of his work and attend numerous interviews as part of the award process.

Hedger Constructions did not hesitate to nominate Michael for this prestigious award given his commitment to his trade, his determination to learning all aspects of his craft and the quality of his workmanship. Michael has been a terrific representative of the company with clients and his involvement in sports coaching of junior teams makes him a valuable member of the local community.

Congratulations should also go to Rodney Hedger in his mentoring role for Michael along with other local paint tradesman who have passed on valuable knowledge to Michael whilst working on Hedger Constructions sites.

The team at Hedger Constructions wishes Michael well in his continuing role with the company.

“Best Sustainable Home” North East Region MBAV Awards 2015

Hedger Constructions was proud to receive the award for “Best Sustainable Home” for the North East Region from the Master Builders Association of Victoria North East Regional Awards 2015.

Thank you to the clients Peter and Michelle New for the opportunity to build such an amazing house and Mark “Funky” Durrance for being a super supervisor!

Rated at 8.4 stars the house has outstanding thermal qualities through the use of a roof top garden, double studded walls with insulated filled air gap, double brick core filled walls and double glazing. Water caught via the roof top garden Versidrain is captured and re-directed to water storage tanks. This is then pumped back to the garden when required. The use of polystyrene under the slab acts as thermal break and complements other insulation throughout the house. The integration of the house into the sloping nature of the block allows for the use of the soil and thermal mass to further enhance the insulation qualities. Lighting is provided through the use of LED down lighting and air conditioning and heating through controlled split systems.

NAWIC's mission is to promote and improve the construction industry by the advancement of women within it. The Business Woman award recognises the outstanding achievement of a woman who is a director, owner, partner or senior manager of a company which is directly involved in the construction industry.

As co-owner of Hedger Constructions, the award recognised Sharon's commitment to her team, highlighting factors such as the company's significantly above average staff retention rate, quality constructions, genuinely satisfied customers and Sharon's community leadership as the basis of her commendation.

Brian Fitzmaurice
Memorial Award

Hedger Constructions was honored to be awarded the Brian Fitzmaurice Memorial Award by the MBAV. This annual award recognises an employer for their contribution to training and apprenticeships.

Hedger Constructions has so far employed 15 apprentices with 100% completion rate. A number of our apprentices have received TAFE awards, Master Builders Regional Apprentice of the Year awards, employer nominated and even the Master Builders State Apprentice of the Year award.

Hedger Constructions also tries to retain our apprentices and have ex-apprentices working for us on wages and as subcontractors.

It is the desire to train apprentices and give back to the industry by producing outstanding trades people that was highlighted as the basis of Hedger Constructions winning this prestigious award.
